Frequently Asked Questions
We do have a waitlist for our doodle puppies. Our current wait can range from 0-12 months depending on what exactly you are looking for and how many people currently on the waitlist choose to decline on a particular litter.
To get on our waitlist, we require a completed online application submitted as well as a non-refundable deposit placed. Once our office team has both of those items accounted for, we will place you on our waitlist. You can submit your application here. You can place your deposit here.
Our doodles range in pricing depending upon the breed. We also sometimes offer our Breeder’s Choice spots up for pet adoption. This offers top picking positions but the pricing is higher than standardized pricing. You can check out the pricing here.
Once you have submitted your application and deposit, and we have confirmed to you that you are on the waitlist, the next step would be watching our Instagram feed. If you are getting an Australian Labradoodle you will follow: Sutterbutteslabradoodles. For all other doodle breeds follow: Southmountaindoodles. We will post all BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS to our feed and to our stories. So, if you are ready to adopt and have an application and deposit submitted, be watching our feed daily! If you see a BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT that strikes your interest, you will follow the instructions on the post and text our litter coordinator’s number to “request a reservation”. Within 72 hours we will gather up the list of everyone who has requested a reservation and we will get back with you on where you would fall on that particular litter list. The main point being, if you are ready to adopt start watching that Instagram feed and stories on the daily to take that next step!
All choosing is made on a specified Gotcha Day when the litter is 8 weeks old. You will be given a specific appointment time which is based on what position you hold on that particular litter list. The day you choose your puppy is also the day that your puppy goes home with you. That’s why we call it Gotcha Day!
We will post weekly picture updates to our Instagram account. Each litter will be given a specific hashtag. The hashtag consists of the parent names and birthdate. An example would be #dolleyjeffersonmay1 This makes it easy to find your litter and not have to scroll to find them. We do not allow visitors as our pups are not fully vaccinated in their early weeks and we take no chances with their health.
While we do not ever ship our puppies in cargo, we do offer our own exclusive DoodleLyftAir. We have a wonderful flight nanny who will fly with your puppy in the cabin and hand-deliver him|her to you at your nearest airport. Please inquire for pricing details for our DoodleLyftAir service.
We have a two year health warranty and contract for genetic conditions.
All of our puppies leave on Gotcha day up to date on vaccinations, wormings, microchipped and vet checked.

Adoption is the term we use when you decide to make a SBL|SMD Doodle a part of your family. When you make the choice to adopt from Sutter Buttes Labradoodles or South Mountain Doodles, you will receive the following:
- A spay/neuter agreement will be included in the health warranty and contract. This must be completed by 6 months of age with copies of spay/neuter certificate sent to SBL|SMD for confirmation. If buying a pup for breeding purposes this will obviously not apply to your pup.
- 1st series of vaccinations as well as current de-wormings. You will be given a health record to update as necessary as well as to give to your veterinarian.
- Your puppy will be microchipped at 7 weeks of age.
- Your puppy will go home with a 3 day supply of the kibble he/she has been eating here at SBL|SMD.
- A signed contract that will include our 2 year health guarantee, sales conditions as well as any other necessary details spelled out specifically for your puppy. This contract is binding and designed to protect the seller, the buyer and most important – the puppy.
- Support for the life span of your Doodle – 24/7
Note that SBL|SMD reserves the right to retain for it’s own breeding stock replenishment, puppies from any and all litters it sees fit.
General Info:
Please be open to either a male or female Doodle. Due to the special care used when selecting breeding pairs, males and females exude virtually the same temperaments. As part of our contract puppies must be spayed/neutered by 6 months of age and as a result often do not develop many gender-specific traits. Being open to either sex may shorten the length of your wait for a Doodle pup.
We do NOT use cargo as a form to ship our puppies. It is not safe! We offer Airport Delivery Service to Sacramento International Airport (SMF) in which we will meet you with puppy in hand as you walk off the plane and then you will fly home with your puppy in the cabin with you. This is associated with a very reasonable fee. We also work with a pet nanny who will bring your puppy directly to your closest airport. The fee is also reasonable and you can rest assured that your new SBL|SMD Doodle will arrive safe and sound!
It is important to note that all of our breeding stock undergo hip testing (OFA) and eye testing (CERF). This is to ensure us as well as the buyer (to the best of our ability) that our Doodle pups are free of potential hereditary defects. While these tests do not give us an absolute guarantee that our pups will not have any hereditary problems, they are still the best way to determine that our breeding stock is clear of specific defects. With this testing in place, we can be sure we are passing the best possible genetic combinations along to your puppy.
We require that you take your puppy to your veterinarian for a well-puppy visit within 72 hours of receiving him/her. Our pups come with a general 7-day health guarantee and a 24-month genetic health guarantee. All veterinary expenses are the responsibility of the buyer.
We ask that (as much as you may want to) you do not take your puppy out and about in public until he/she has completed the series of puppy shots (usually 14 to 16 weeks of age). Young pups are at risk to the parvovirus as well as many other contagious illnesses. The parvovirus can stay dormant in the ground for up to 7 years! All it takes is a curious little puppy to dig around in contaminated dirt, dog feces and/or dog vomit to contract the potentially and commonly fatal virus. We recommend that you carry your puppy into the veterinarian’s office and hold him/her for the duration of your visits. The veterinarian offices are a common place for the parvovirus to enter due to the high volume of animals walking around inside. Once your puppy has had its full series of shots it is perfectly safe to take that puppy out and show him/her off!!
We will make the greatest attempt in matching you to the pup that best suits your needs. Be very specific when filling out the Online Adoption Application. It is an aid to us in determining which puppy will be the best addition to your family.
If at any time you feel as though you can no longer care for your Doodle, we ask that you contact SBL|SMD Doodle so that we can aid you in placing him/her in a home we feel comfortable with. We never want any of our Doodles to end up in an animal shelter. We ask that you make this commitment to us. We are always interested in feedback regarding pups that leave us. Feel free to email updates and pictures to us. We take pride in our pups and love to see them as they grow into BIGGER Doodles!
1) Doodles make wonderful additions to one’s family. They are known to possess the gentle and sweet disposition of the Retrievers combined with the intelligence and allergy-friendly coat of the Poodle. Doodles are great with children and are easily trained. They are eager to please and tend to go with the flow of family life… they just blend right in!
2) If you suffer from allergies but want a dog, Doodles may be the breed for you! Many people suffer from pet allergies and are unable to be near a dog, let alone own their own. It is not the dog fur that allergy sufferers are allergic to, but actually, the dander that clings to the dog’s fur. Doodles have no to low shedding coats which tend to be allergy-friendly due to the lower percentage of dander their coats contain as compared to other breeds. One should be aware that not every allergy sufferer will be able to tolerate the Doodles but most find them either completely allergy-friendly and/or tolerable. They are a new alternative for those who never thought it possible to have a dog as a pet.
3) No to low shed coats are a plus! It is important to find a coat type that suits your style. Doodles coats vary in their ability to shed or not to shed. First cross (F1) Doodles can vary from no to heavy shedding coats. Backcross Doodles (F1b) tend to be much more allergy-friendly with no to low shed coats. Multi-Gen Doodles tend to be non-shedding to very light shedding dogs due to the consistency of coat types within the Multi-Gen lineage. Multi-Gen Doodles tend to be the best bet for the person with allergies or someone wanting a non-shedding dog.
4) Doodles get along well with other animals. Due to their wonderful dispositions, Doodles tend to get along with other animals and family pets. When bringing a new pet into any family scenario in which other pets are involved, there may always be a few adjustments here and there that need to be made. With Doodles, the transition time is usually relatively short, as they seem to come right into their new environment already well adjusted and ready to join their new pack.
5) Doodles are unique! You will find that wherever your Doodles goes people will show interest. Because Doodles are still a relatively new breed in the states, you don’t run into Doodles every day. People will be curious and very interested in your Doodles. It seems that regardless of where I take our Doodles, they are constantly the topic of discussion due to their unique look and adorable personalities!
